About the founder
Caitlin Pyle founded Proofread Anywhere in 2014. A crusader for other entrepreneurs, she has been a freelance proofreader since 2007 and is an author with 4 published books. She has also featured in multiple business journals such as Forbes, The Business Insider and the Penny Hoarder.
How does the course work?
Caitlin Pyre offers two courses in her Proofread Anywhere Series – ‘General Proofreading: Theory and Practice ‘ ( 1 month to complete) and the more advanced course called ‘Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice’ (2-4 months to complete).
These courses are full of information in the form of detailed video tutorials, blog posts, etc. and also have worksheets to practice on.
It is also mandatory to take exams and pass with a required score before you’re awarded the certificate of completion.
Here’s a little look into the Transcript Proofreading course:
Module 1 –
Module 1 is the basic introduction to the course where you learn the background information and essentials to learn to proofread.
Being able to identify with your client is necessary, thus this section is widely informative and needs more hours dedicated to it when compared to the other sections. It includes the working of Steno, the making of a transcript, the types of transcripts and some other introductory resources.
Module 2 :
This module includes punctuations and the types of errors you often encounter while proofreading. You’ll also go through lessons on grammar punctuation, common errors, etc, which are mostly focused on transcripts. Resources in the form of handouts, videos and worksheets are available in this module.
This part shows four different methods to mark transcripts. The creator recommends using an iPad since that has proven to be the most beneficial for proofreaders. However, if you don’t have one, this section also talks about other methods and analysis along with their benefits and pitfalls.
Module 4 gives a closer look at the popular methods of proofreading used over the years. It also has screencast videos showing you to how to mark up a transcript.
This is the practice section where you apply your knowledge. All the theory you’ve learned is put in action here. 50 practice transcripts along with their answer keys are available in this section. A quiz page with 9 questions on punctuation errors is also available to further boost the student’s confidence. You have to correct every error and answer all questions correctly in order to progress.
This module is all about communicating with clients. It teaches students how to satisfy the requirements of their clients and provide good customer service. The best practices to ensure smooth sailing and a cordial relationship with the client are discussed.
Module 7 is the more technical part of the course where students go through the ins and outs of billing. The end of module 7 is the final exam. There are two exams that need to be passed:
- A 75 questions multiple choice test that needs to be completed in 50 minutes with a score of 90% or higher. You get a maximum of 3 attempts to make this happen.
- The other is the final exam transcript which is 25 pages long and requires rectification of errors. Any missed errors can require retaking the exam and delay the process of getting the certificate of completion.
Only successful completion of both these exams leads to gaining access of module 8: the Marketing section
Module 8 :
In the units of this module, you are told where to find clients, how to approach them, strategies to get hired, steps to build your own website and plenty of other dos and don’ts. This part also has a social media training section where students learn how to use social media for their businesses. This unit is dedicated fully to videos by experts in this field..
The last and final module is the 9th one which has a farewell pep talk from Caitlin Pyle, the founder of the program and the push you need to get you on your way.

What sets this course apart?
Their Facebook community –
One of the best parts about this course is their extended Facebook community. This community includes graduates from this program and other experts. It is an extremely supportive group and has frequent updates, tips, and facts about the proofreading community.
With immense encouragement and support, the Proofread Anywhere facebook page has become a safe place for all the students and alumni of this course.
Doubles as a marketing course –
It’s not just a proofreading course but also a marketing course. You not only learn the skill to read for errors but also learn how to sell your skill and bag clients.
Doesn’t block all your money together-
What’s surprising is that the website doesn’t allow its users to pay for the whole course at one go. You can only pay for the next level of the course once you’ve successfully completed the previous one. This is a definite reflection of Caitlin’s motive to only grant access to people who are genuinely interested and also enables users who aren’t as interested to save their money. No one should feel like their money is blocked in an investment that doesn’t interest them.
Personal touch –
The creator, Caitlin, stays in constant contact with her students via e-mail for solving any problems or queries they face.
Free 7 day trial-
Proofreading is not everyone’s cup of tea. You thus can try out the course and see if it is for you with their 7-day free trial. This gives users some perspective about the course and ensures their interest.
How much can you expect to earn?
How much a proofreader earns depends on the rate he charges and of course, his skill. The faster you can proofread the more clients you can take up in a span of time.
Fortunately, the proofreading game has changed entirely thanks to technology. The original proofreading process of printing a document, marking it and scanning it back to the clients would take months on end. However, these days, a simple iPad is enough to cut your proofreading time by half.
The better you get at using this technology and fast proofreading, the more you can get for your time. A beginner with no prior experience makes at least $20 an hour.
The paying rate also depends on the type of document in question. For example, a non-fiction biography is tougher to read than a romantic novel, thus the rate for proofreading a nonfiction document can be higher when compared to others.
If you are looking to make some extra money from home or start a career in proofreading, Proofread Anywhere is your guide through it. A course which ensures complete knowledge- theoretical and practical, it is an investment towards a brighter and more successful future all in the comforts of your home.
